Information
This exhibition presents Nakao’s elaborately layered, collaged paintings, which incorporate fabric, stitching, lace and stickers as well as motifs such as butterflies and doll like figures. Before becoming an artist Nakao studied fashion design in Tokyo and her work promotes a strong association between making clothes and painting. Slack canvases, which the artist views as “bones and skin, the folds resembling flesh”, are dressed in ornate, stitched and collaged designs, which often include portraits of the artist as a butterfly or strange flying insect. Nakao also creates richly embellished costumes that she wears as works, flipping the “humanization” of her paintings on their head by turning her body into the canvas.
