'Having survived being alone in Venice for those weeks, away from her beloved Bloomsbury studio, Paul found herself painting "with renewed passion." The self-portraits she produced after her return are noticeably different: a more direct gaze, a slight uptilt of the chin; in some of them, the paint marks that encrust her smock have migrated beyond the cloth to the whole room.' — Sophie Barling
