Each card in this 54-card deck designed by Chris Ofili features a different woman, man or flower from Ofili's Afro Muse series, a body of work exhibited by the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2005.
Although reminiscent of someone, somewhere at some moment in time, these intimate watercolour images are figurative expressions rather than portraits of individuals. Like the characters that populate the artist's larger paintings, they derive from impressions and references from everyday life, memory and the history of art.
The cards were originally produced for the Studio Museum on the occasion of their reopening.
