Wangechi Mutu explores colonial history, African politics and the worldwide fashion industry in a range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture and installation. She draws on her experiences and observations to contrast Western and African cultures. She is known for confronting racial and gender stereotypes and is a committed campaigner for LGBT rights in Africa. Mutu was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1972, and is now based in New York.
