Traditionally awarded on Culture Day, a national holiday held annually on November 3 in Japan to promote culture, the arts and academic endeavour, the Order of Culture is one of the highest honours bestowed by the Imperial Family. The award is conferred in person by the Emperor at a ceremony held at the Imperial Palace to those who have significantly advanced science, the arts or culture. Kusama is the first woman to be honored with the prestigious medal for drawings and sculptures.
