Khalif Tahir Thompson talks to The New York Times

'The artist Khalif Tahir Thompson's dynamic portraits, which are suffused with a warm, Y2K-era nostalgia, are drawn partly from the 31-year-old's own life. His subjects appear in tender domestic scenes inspired by old family albums, or amid vibrant cityscapes that channel the museums, parks and streets that provided some of the Brooklyn-born artist's earliest points of creative reference. Many of the works reflect a New York that doesn't quite exist anymore.

A new exhibition of his paintings, some of which incorporate elements of collage and printmaking, opens today at London's Victoria Miro gallery.'
