Widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Kusama was renowned for her prolific and ground-breaking practice, encompassing painting, sculpture, performance, moving image, large-scale installation, fashion and writing. Trained in traditional Japanese painting, she moved to the United States in 1957 and quickly established herself in the American and European avant-garde with her unique and radical artistic language. She returned to Japan in 1973 and, relentlessly reinventing, created work that meaningfully connected with the times in which she lived.
