This book is published on the occasion of Chantal Joffe's 2003 solo exhibition at Victoria Miro Gallery,Women. This new body of work comprises some 15 studies of exclusively female subjects, a departure from the small paintings of children and large landscapes for which she is known. Joffe's women vacillate between the realms of reality and fiction, at times appearing to be portraits of friends and at other times appearing to be characters drawn from the artist's imagination. The book includes colour reproductions of the exhibited works, as well as an insightful text by independent art critic and curator, Sacha Craddock.
