Alice Neel
by Jeremy Lewison
Victoria Miro Gallery, 2004
This catalogue accompanies Alice Neel's 2004 solo exhibition at Victoria Miro Gallery. Moved by her interest in social engagement and her pursuit of 'the truth,' Neel relocated from Greenwich Village to Spanish Harlem in 1938, where she encountered and subsequently painted a host of characters ranging from children on the street to left-wing artists and writers. The resulting body of works she created over the next decades demonstrate her intimate engagement with her subjects and her remarkable ability to capture the spontaneity and honesty of her encounters. The catalogue includes a text by Jeremy Lewison, who advises the Estate of Alice Neel.
